Research Experience

Research Assistant, Crustacea Division, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles. September 2001 to present. Monographic research on clam shrimp.
Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Biological Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee. April 2000 to September 2001. DNA extraction, amplification, purification, and phylogenetic analysis of various crustacean groups.
Laboratory Technician, University of Georgia, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, Aiken, SC. May 1999 to August 1999. Prepared samples for automated DNA sequencing, operated an ABI 377XL automated sequencer, and analyzed microsatellite sequence data.
Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Program Participant, Department of Biological Sciences, University of South Carolina, Columbia. August 1998 to May 1999. Conducted independent research on the phylogeographic relationships of Microarthridion littorale (Crustacea: Copepoda: Harpacticoida) using DNA analysis techniques to determine cosmopolitan or sister-species-complex relationships. Mentors: Drs. Joseph Staton and Bruce Coull.
Laboratory Assistant, Department of Biological Sciences, University of South Carolina, Columbia. January 1998 to May 1999. Extracted, amplified, purified, and analyzed DNA from pelagic calanoid copepods.
Field and Laboratory Assistant,Marine Science Program, University of South Carolina, Columbia. May 1997 to August 1997. Set up microcosm experiment testing the effect of soil toxicity on the feeding behavior of a small estuarine fish. Sorted, identified, and counted benthic harpacticoid copepods and other benthic meiofauna. Dissection and gut analyses of fish.
Laboratory Assistant, Department of Geological Sciences, University of South Carolina, Columbia. August 1996 to May 1997. Washed deep sea cores, identified and counted benthic foraminifera of the Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) leg 166, the Bahamas Transect, and preformed data entry.
Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program Participant, University of South Carolina, Columbia. September 1995 to May 1996. Introduction to microscopy, general laboratory skills and procedures, and library skills. Assisted graduate students with research.
