East Pacific Rise. November, 2003. R/V Atlantis cruise 11-03 for study of biodiversity of hydrothermal vents along the East Pacific Rise from 08°37'N to 12°48'N. Made exploratory dives in manned submersible Alvin, collected deep-sea marine invertebrates for identification and study. Cruise duration, 4 weeks.
Bahamas, Lee Stocking Island. January, 2003. Collection, sorting, photography, and identification of marine invertebrates from caves and shallow waters of the Exuma Cays.
Mexico, Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) and Pacific Coast of Baja California peninsula. Annually since 1991. Collected amphipod and isopod Crustacea in Gulf of California, quarterly trips from 1991-1994. Participated in 6-week Marine Ecology course in Baja California, emphasis on development of question-driven projects related to marine life. 1994. Assisted with Invertebrate Zoology class trip to Puerto Peñasco. 1995-2003. Traveled and collected throughout Gulf of California and Pacific Coast of Baja California, mainly from littoral zone, also shallow subtidal work.
British Virgin Islands, Guana Island. June, 2000; July, 2001. Participation in NSF-funded project of the Biotic Surveys and Inventories program to survey marine invertebrates of Guana Island. Collected while diving using SCUBA, day and night (by hand, nets, light and baited traps, and artificial reef blocks), operated small boats, recovered of artificial reef components, identified and sorted specimens, organized field gear, and photographed material.
Southwestern US, California. Worked at rocky and estuarine intertidal sites including La Jolla, Mission Bay, Cabrillo National Monument, Palos Verdes peninsula, Ballona Marsh-Marina del Rey, Carpenteria Salt Marsh, Elkhorn Slough, Tomales Bay, and Bodega Bay.
Belize, Glover's Reef Marine Research Station. January-March, 1997. Assisted with field project on blennioid fishes of the family Tripterygiidae, identified and mapped scleractinian corals using SCUBA, collected fishes, operated small boats, assisted with sponsorship of two volunteer students from Long Island University.
Southeastern US, South Carolina. 1994-1998. Studied and collected invertebrates from Spartina marshes, barrier islands. Georgia. June-July,1997. Worked on Ogeechee River to determine patterns of transport of larval shrimps and fishes, used CTD casts, bottom sleds, and plankton tows. Florida. 1998. Sampled Crustacea from mangrove lagoons, bays, and reefs off Key West.
Collections work. 1994-2002. Systematics research included visits to National Museum of Natural History (Washington, D.C.), Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (Los Angeles), The Natural History Museum (London), and Zoologisk Museum (Copenhagen) for study of collections.
